My youngest (two-year-old) daughter is unwell, she has been throwing up for the last 48 hours. It is a tummy bug. I have spent my time sitting with her, rocking her and giving her all the comfort I can. She has not been able to hold down any food, so is weak and dehydrated, but today for the first time, things are improving. I made up a batch of bone broth and gave it to her. We thought of giving her re-hydration salts, but I decided that a broth was far better, I wasn’t really looking forward to bright orange vomit on the sheets. We thought she may like the sweet taste of the salts, but we were wrong, it was actually the taste of salt alone that she wanted.
I heated the broth with a couple of tablespoons of mashed potato added to thicken it and a pinch of celtic sea salt. She ate most of a small bowlful. Before she ate though, she added another sprinkle of salt and a splash of soy sauce herself from the table. I knew that this would have made it taste incredibly salty, but she knew what she needed and she helped herself. I hope the fermented soy sauce did her little stomach some good against those nasties.
I am continuing with the broth, slowly adding other things: tonight pasta and noodles, tomorrow, I will let her sop up the broth with sourdough bread. Fingers crossed, so far she has kept it all down. It is up to her what she feels she can eat.
I know that this broth is a healer, but it also is a comforter; warm, easy to eat, satisfying, yet not too difficult to digest. At times like this, I want to do all I can to comfort my child, whilst she gets on with the business of healing herself.
